I used to want to be a food critic. After all what real foodie hasn’t at one time or another. Just the thought of eating all the time, for free and talking about what you like to do best. Dah! Doesn’t get any better than that! Just thinking about it makes me stray from what I was trying to talk about here. Great food in just one place discovered just today.
Su Healthy Cuisine at 725 River Road (Unit 21) in Edgewater, New Jersey. When I met the owner, Calvin Soh, he said, “Dr. Oz liked it too”. (For those of you who don’t live in Jersey like Dr. Oz and myself, or don’t watch Oprah like, who doesn’t, Dr. Oz is a regular and even has his own tv times). There I go, straying again. Back to the great food!
In trying to make it to our Sunday-movie-day-afternoon-flick, we decided to dine in a restaurant near the theatre. Low and behold, we saw, Su. And said, why not? It sat between a massage/spa and a karate class storefront in the strip mall with a door that seemed to open automatically. Oh my, someone actually opened the door and invited us to enter. How polite. Ambience? Gentle music and serenity. Colors? Calm. Service? Speedy, understanding and I overheard an explanation of the menu items to someone at another table who had questions. The food was hot and good. I tried the “Wild mushroom barley soup with peas and fresh dill”. I was delightfully surprised to be filled with veggies and four tasty croutons, too. Nothing heavy. Broth, not cream. I’m picky. I confess.
I sampled a spring roll from my fella’s plate. Yum! Fresh Enoki, bamboo shoots, carrots, cabbage and soy protein. (I’ll get my own next time!) He got a salad-huge it was! I got what was described as a “small plate” of Pad Thai rice noodles with peanut cashew garnish. Delicious! And large! And to the delight of just eight bucks.
I just had to try a little dessert. Deep fried banana nuggets with maple sauce and candied walnuts. (I didn’t eat the maple sauce and only half the walnuts. I actually split the dessert. Now. Guilt be gone!)
It was definitely a day of great food at a wonderful new foodie find. I only wish the movie had been as good.
